From a spiritual perspective, it now appears that Sri Aurobindo’s depiction of our epoch in The Life Divine just might be true: part of the ‘perfection’ of unfolding Being is that there seem to be some repeated pulses of new spiritual dispensation, or radical emergence, a recurring ‘descent of the divine into historical time’ from outside time. When those pulses occur, they demand that the spiritually awake give over their favorite egoic projects, and participate in whatever new is unfolding. He is the latest philosopher to argue from a stance of the ‘descent of the divine into manifestation,’ and to claim it for our epoch. The Aurobindo thesis is that the spiritual development of humanity is an evolution of consciousness that applies to the whole planet. Aurobindo argued it will appear as both a discontinuity from past trends, and yet as a fulfillment of their highest ideals. The key to the next phase of human development might well be to represent Wisdom through the arts, including a new sense of the entry of Wisdom from reality (the realm of Being beyond space-time) into actuality (the space-time domain). Spirit itself might not be representable, but spiritual perception of reality and actuality may be critically important as the context and surround for the Wisdom Arts.
